A.E.S. Green Ambassadors - 5th Grade
The fifth grade Green Ambassadors' mission is to help the student body and staff of Atholton to be even greener than they already are. They do this by meeting with their assigned classes throughout the school to teach the students about environmental initiatives the school will undertake. The Green Ambassadors also act as role models and teachers by presenting environmental information they have learned from community experts. They hope to encourage other schools to follow in their footsteps.
Preparing to Communicate with A.E.S. Staff
In order to represent our assigned classes, Green Ambassadors must keep a written Communication Log with each of our assigned classroom teachers to set appointments in order to make presentations.
Glue Collection Boxes:
We send empty glue sticks to send to Terracycle, where they will be upcycled to make new products. Each class has a collection box. When we presented the boxes to the classrooms, we explained how to empty the glue stick before placing it in the box. We keep track of our glue sticks, and so far we have about 1,500!
Learning from an Expert:
Ms. Moore, Howard County's recycling expert, presented to the Green Ambassadors to give us detailed information on current recycling practices. We then went to our classes to present what we learned.
Greenwear Fundraising:
To help raise funds for the Green Team, we advertised AES Greenwear and Flip n' Tumble reusable bags.
Soles for Souls:
Green Ambassadors worked to collect 572 pairs of shoes for those in need. Making morning announcements, visiting their assigned classrooms to present the initiative, and working to rubber band all 572 pairs, the Green Ambassadors did a fabulous job giving back to community - and staying GREEN!
Introducing Our New Feeders:
Our bird feeders were finally installed, so it was time to educate the student body. Green Ambassadors learned about the benefits of feeders, particularly the hopper feeder, and then it was time to show & watch!
Attending AES Green Team Meeting:
The most important Green Team meeting of the year was one the Green Ambassadors had to attend! This meeting was for the purpose of deciding upon which initiatives we would undertake a Green School for the year. Students, parents and staff all provided input, and in turn it was a totally successful and VERY GREEN year!
Painting a Message of Conservation:
We worked hard as a team to get Atholton's storm drains painted with a message to make people aware when it comes to drainage. During Water Conservation Week, we took our classes out to see the drains.
Green Ambassadors Teach the Panther about Water Conservation:
As part of a school-wide effort to encourage water conservation, Green Ambassadors worked to put together a movie for every child in the school to watch during Water Conservation Week. The students and staff LOVED it, and what a valuable message the Panther learned!
Beautifying AES Grounds:
We're proud of our schoolyard, and it shows! We took the chance to prune and weed our native garden for all to enjoy. And we also worked with our business partner, Garden Gate, to plant 75 native cone flowers!
