Treasure the Chesapeake - 4th Grade
Planting Bay Grass Seeds:
We learned about the benefits of S.A.V., submerged aquatic vegetation, to the Chesapeake Bay. Working with Department of Natural Resources, we were able obtain Wild Celery seeds. Parents came out to help, and plant WE DID!
Cause & Effect Chains:
Nutrients have a major negative effect on the Chesapeake Bay. In order to analyze the course of events, we made chains to show relationships between a variety of causes and effects.
Reducing Our Footprint:
Once we learned the components on sustainability, we tried to think beyond the 3 R's to come up with methods for reducing our carbon footprint.
Using Technology to Communicate:
Because we learned about sustainability, when Mrs. Young found out we could participate in a webinar about Styrofoam-free lunches in New York, we were all in! We listened carefully, making note of the ideas being shared, and in the end, we were able to ask questions. Most of our questions were answered live through a chat text field. It's amazing to be able to communicate across state borders during school!
Solutions for the Bay:
With a chosen problem the Bay faces, we each took our research home, looked more deeply into one specific Bay issue, and then proposed a solution based on our research. Then it was time to model our solutions. Problem-solvers, UNITE!
Planting Our Beautiful Grasses:
Working with Chesapeake Bay Foundation, we were able to go on a field trip to their headquarters in order to plant our bay grasses in the Chesapeake Bay. While there, we also learned a lot about sustainable building design, as CBF is one of the GREENEST buildings in the world!
A Night to Inform Our Dads:
Since 4th grade CEU students learned the impact fertilizer has on the Chesapeake Bay, we felt it was time to let AES dads know, too! Alyssa and Mason prepared and organized a presentation about the effects of fertilizer in our watershed. Then they introduced our business partner from Garden Gate Landscaping, who spoke of the company's new organic lawn care program and answered questions. Well done!
