North to Alaska! - 2nd Grade
How might life be different for someone living all the way up in Alaska? In this group we explored some of what makes Alaska such a unique place!
A Place With Many Cultures:
Alaska has many tribes that make up its rich native culture. We looked at the differences of some of the native tribes and where they were each located on the our Alaska maps.
Iron Dog:
The Iron Dog is the toughest snowmachine race in the world. Racing in pairs, the contestants head from Anchorage to Nome...and BACK! This is over 2,000 miles! Mr. Young came to visit the class to teach us about the Iron Dog, because he is a two-time competitor. We followed Mr. and Mrs. Young's best friend, Doug Dixon, who was competing in the race. We used the Iron Dog website and its GPS map to watch the race in action!
The Iditarod:
One of the most famous things about Alaska is the Iditarod Sled Dog Race. Soon after the Iron Dog, it was time to log on to decide who we were cheering for in the Iditarod. We each picked a musher, and then we watched the internet from school and home to follow our chosen mushers. Jimmy and Connor chose the musher who came in closest to winning, so they each got several blue tickets! Mush on!
